CNC Machining Carbon Fiber Tube Styles and Operations
End Machining & Facing
Create a perfectly square, clean, and dimensionally accurate end for bonding or butting against another component.
Operations:
Facing: Machining the tube end flat and perpendicular to its axis.
Chamfering/Beveling: Adding an angled edge (typically 30°-45°) to ease assembly, improve adhesive bonding strength, or for aesthetic purposes.
Profiling: Cutting the tube end to a non-perpendicular angle (e.g., for a mitered joint in a frame).
Hole & Port Machining
Create holes for fasteners (pins, bolts), vents, or fluid pass-through.
Radial Holes: Drilled through the tube wall perpendicular to the axis. Most common. High risk of delamination on the exit side.
Axial Holes: Drilled down the center or parallel to the tube axis (requires specialized fixturing).
Slotted Holes: Machined elongated holes for adjustment or alignment.
Grooving & Threading
To create retention grooves for circlips or o-rings, or threads.
External or internal circumferential grooves. Performed with a fine-pitch, sharp carbide tool or a dedicated grooving tool.
Slotting & Splining
To create a keyway for a pinned connection or a drive spline for torque transmission.
Precise milling of longitudinal slots or gear-like splines along the ID or OD.
