Filament Wound Carbon Fiber Tube
Filament wound carbon fiber tubes have very long continuous fibers which add to the strength and stiffness of the structure. The manufacturing process allows for longer carbon fiber tubes than our standard roll-wrapping process. If you are looking for a higher temperature, we can build almost all of these tubes with a different resin system good for up to 400F. The angles used in the winding process make the final product an excellent choice for torsion applications. Available in a gloss or sanded matte finish.
The filament winding process involves two primary components. A stationary steel mandrel rotates, while a carriage arm travels horizontally up and down the length of the mandrel. As the mandrel turns, the rovings wrap around it to form a composite layer over the mandrel's surface. Before encountering the mandrel, the fibers are impregnated with resin, which later solidifies with the fiber to create the final composite material.
Filament Wound Carbon Fiber Tube Features
1. Superior, Controllable Strength-to-Weight Ratio
The process allows for precise fiber placement and orientation. Fibers can be aligned precisely along the load paths (typically helical ±θ angles and hoop/90° winds). Strength and stiffness are tailored to specific stress types (axial, torsional, burst pressure). This results in a more efficient structure than pultrusion or roll-wrapping for complex loads.
2. Exceptional Hoop Strength & Pressure Resistance
The winding pattern can place a high volume of fibers at or near 90 degrees (circumferential) around the tube. This makes it the ideal process for pressure vessels and pipes. It provides maximum resistance to internal bursting pressure, outperforming other tube manufacturing methods in this regard.
3. High Fiber Volume Fraction & Consistency
The tensioned winding process compacts fibers tightly, and resin content is precisely controlled, often via prepreg tows oran in-line resin bath. Achieves very high fiber-to-resin ratios of 60-70% fiber by volume, minimizing resin-rich weak points. This leads to excellent repeatable mechanical properties part-to-part.
4. Excellent Torsional Rigidity
By winding fibers in balanced ±45° or other helical angles, the tube is optimized to resist twisting forces. Critical for driveshafts, torque tubes, and robotic arms, where controlled rotation.
5. Seamless, Monolithic Construction
The tube is created as a continuous, single-piece structure with no seams or longitudinal joints, unlike roll-wrapped tubes. Eliminates potential weak points or leak paths, enhancing structural integrity and pressure containment.
