More Torque

Independent testing by a trusted automotive periodical showed rear wheel horsepower increased by more than 5% with only the switch from a conventional steel driveshaft to a carbon fiber driveshaft. This is primarily due to the lighter rotational mass of the carbon fiber driveshaft. A lightweight carbon fiber driveshaft allows more engine power to be transferred to the wheels.

Higher RPM

Driveline vibration is a common problem that can limit RPM. In racing scenarios, metal driveshafts experience harmonic whip, limiting usable RPM and forcing them to run the engine well below redline in each gear. A carbon fiber driveshaft was developed that allowed a 1000 RPM increase in useable engine speed and gave the engine a chance to work at its'power peak. Since 1987, many racers in all areas of motorsports have discovered the extra RPM and the resulting tuning flexibility carbon fiber driveshafts provide.

Better Reliability

All drive shafts twist to some degree when torque is applied. The resistance to this twist is measured as torsional spring rate. Carbon Fiber (composite) drive shafts have a torsional spring rate a little less than aluminum and about half that of steel. The advantage of a lower spring rate is less driveline shock and a reduction of stress on other drivetrain components, as well as increased traction.

Increased Safety

Carbon fiber drive shafts are built for strength for torque transfer and can be broken with a hard blow from the side. The result is that when a u-joint or yoke fails, the carbon fiber composite begins to disintegrate when it contacts the chassis. As the composite comes apart, the shaft simply turns into a bunch of loose carbon fibers instead of tearing up the driver and vehicle.

A lighter carbon fiber shaft increases your fuel economy, and increases your rotational mass, which, as mentioned earlier, increases torque. It also makes installation easier.

Frequently Asked Questions About Carbon Fiber Driveshafts

Q: Does a carbon fiber driveshaft make a difference?

A:You can also take advantage of higher critical speeds compared to similar-sized driveshafts in steel or aluminum. In addition, carbon fiber won't disintegrate into damaging metal pieces in the case of driveshaft failure. Instead, it will just separate into individual strands.

Q: How much HP can a carbon fiber driveshaft handle?

A: It's a common misconception to rate a driveshaft by horsepower because torque is all that affects the driveshaft. Our driveshafts have horsepower ratings listed because most customers have this info, so we list horsepower ratings of 750 to 2000 HP depending on the U-joint used. We do need torque ratings before we can recommend a particular driveshaft though.

Q: Can you use a carbon fiber driveshaft if it's been dropped?

A: While care instructions for carbon fiber driveshafts often state to replace them if they've been dropped, that's also generally listed in steel or aluminum driveshaft instructions and is not an indication of any sort of fragility on the part of carbon fiber. Like other materials, carbon fiber needs to be taken care of properly; it's the same as any other equipment you wouldn't want compromised. For example, if you dropped a brand-new $3000 billet crankshaft on the ground, would you use it? It may work, it may not – it's ultimately up to the customer, but we recommend replacing a dropped driveshaft to be safe.

Q: Can you repair a carbon fiber driveshaft?

A: Dents in your driveshaft damage the structural integrity of the shaft and can lead to an unknown amount of reduction in the shaft strength. If you have any kind of damage to your driveshaft, then we recommend that you replace it.

Q: Can I shorten an existing Carbon Fiber driveshaft?

A: Technically yes, we can, but only by a minimum of at least 4-5 inches. Our carbon fiber shafts have billet aluminum ends that extend about 4-5" (depending on tube diameter) inside the carbon fiber shaft.

Q: How long do carbon fiber shafts last?

A: Carbon Fiber shafts are a significant investment that will basically last forever so make sure you know what joint style you need and then use due diligence when deciding on which brand/model to buy.

Q: Can a carbon fiber shaft operate in a misaligned condition?

A: Yes. Accelerated U-joint wear can be a result of extreme misalignment angles, and less consistent RPM can be a result. Dirt late models run about 25 degrees of U-joint angle, which is way more than recommended, but that's what works for their cars.

Q: How do you finish a carbon fiber shaft?

A: If your shaft is 100% carbon fiber, you can sand it down and apply a final coat of all-weather epoxy over it to give the shaft that nice finish. You can also apply a coat of urethane as well. If your shaft is all or part Kevlar, sanding it down will make it quite hairy.

Q: Can a carbon fiber driveshaft flex?

A: Yes. We design them to flex a certain amount depending on the market. Winding our own tubes in-house gives us this advantage over many of our competitors in the racing and performance market.

Q: Is carbon fiber driveshaft worth it?

A: Yes, Most of us have seen the damage that a steel or aluminum driveshaft can do to the cockpit of a racecar. In the unlikely event of a failure, a carbon fiber driveshaft shreds like a broom, so there is no damage to the racer or other parts of the car.
